Breeding and Life Cycle of The American Cockroach

As you can imagine, this leads to a lot of confusion, as well as misidentification. Cockroach habits are specific by species, so it’s best to consult with Augusta Exterminating to correctly identify the cockroach you see in your home.

From there, we can choose the right method to exterminate these pests.

Where Do American Cockroaches Live?

In southern US states, American cockroaches are found in shady, humid areas such as trees and flower beds. In northern states, you’ll find them in sewers and drains. They eat tiny wood particles, fungi, algae, leaves, and small insects.

Because cockroaches are so hardy and persistent, you’ll most likely need more tools and pest management solutions than you have.

For example, insect growth regulators and microencapsulated formulations.

Even if you feel your home pest control management has worked, keep an eye out.

Roaches tend to come back until your home becomes less desirable and accessible to these filthy creatures.

How To Get Cockroaches Out Of Your Home

American Cockroach Pest Control, Staunton, VA

As a homeowner, you must do your part by:

  • Caulking cracks and door sweeps
  • Remove dead leaves from the foundation of your home
  • Any places that are prone to moisture must be re-evaluated
  • Clean, clean, clean!

Female American cockroaches are prolific breeders, which is why early American cockroach pest control is critical.

Each sack produced after mating carries 16 eggs. But here’s what’s worse. Even if the female doesn’t mate again, they can continue to produce egg sacks with saved sperm!

Under ideal conditions, the female can produce an egg sack every 6 days. On average, however, she will produce 6-14 egg capsules in her lifetime. From egg to full-fledged adult, the American cockroach’s lifespan is anywhere from 168-786 days.

As an adult, the female can live from 90-362 days.

American cockroaches are reddish brown in color with the area behind their heads lined in a yellow band. The females tend to be larger and are sometimes wingless.

Like other species of roaches, the American cockroach eggs are enclosed in an egg case called
oothecae. The oothecae are usually oval-shaped and dark brown in color.

Young cockroaches, called
nymphs, appear similar to their adult counterpart but are paler in color, and without wings. The nymphs will have to molt several times before they become full-fledged adults.

The American cockroach is one of the longest domestic roach species with a measurement of 40 mm or 1.5 inches.

In comparison, German cockroaches are approximately 13-16 mm, or .5-.6 inches long. Oriental cockroaches are about 8-10 mm, or .31-39 inches.

We Can Help!

If American cockroaches typically live outdoors, why do they enter homes? For two reasons only—food and water. Once inside, these roaches look for food under appliances, on the floor, your kitchen cabinets, and in drains.

Like other species of roaches, the American cockroach isn’t picky about what it eats. They will forage for crumbs or scraps of food, pet food left out overnight, and any spilled food they can find.

American cockroaches can easily slide under
doors and weatherstripping if they are damaged. Other common entryways are basement windows and garages.

Then they migrate towards bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, and basements

What Do American Cockroaches Look Like?

How Do I know If I Have An American Cockroach Infestation?

The droppings of the American cockroach are small. So small, in fact, cockroach droppings are often mistaken for mouse droppings.

This cockroach species also has an odor produced by a chemical called an “aggregation pheromone.” It’s a musty smell, which is another sign of an infestation.

With the professional knowledge and expertise of Augusta Exterminating, we can offer pest control solutions that are customized for your home with excellent results. And, our pest control applications are safe around pets and children!

Is An American Cockroach Infestation Bad?

As mentioned above, diatomaceous earth is considered the most effective natural roach killer. Its sharp particles damage the waxy, protective exoskeleton of cockroaches, which causes them to dehydrate and then die.

The downside of this approach is this. There are always more roaches than you can see.

That’s why Augusta Exterminating incorporates several approaches to combat American cockroach infestations effectively.

Using natural home pest control methods requires constant vigilance until the roaches are eliminated:
